Today we celebrate 16 glorious years, although as I write this at 10.30 p.m., we are still over an hour away from the time of the actual event.

16 years of having a daughter.

16 years of all the girlie things as well as plenty of spirit.

When 16 was born I had a moment of worry, would the  boys bully her? Would she be able to stand up to them and for herself? Not that the boys were bullies, it was just a worry. I didn’t want her to be a doormat.

Ha.

I had nothing to worry about.

16 gives as good as she gets. Good on her.

Yet she manages to balance this with kindness, joy and enjoyment of all things girlie and boyish.

I never wanted to impose sexual stereotypes on my kids and neither did I want to disallow them from playing with toys or expressing themselves in a way that would be considered stereotypical. Contradictory? I don’t think so. I wanted them to be themselves. And they are.

So, to my lovely girl, happy birthday. Thank you for 16 great years of watching a beautiful young woman emerge from the baby who arrived 16 years ago. I wish for you every happiness and blessing in the years ahead.
